Fuel with Optimized Uranium and Erbium Content Loaded at Smolensk NPP Unit 1 AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 01.09.2026 The use of fuel with optimized uranium and erbium content has begun at Unit 1 of the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, reports the Rosenergoatom website. The previously used uranium?erbium fuel for RBMK reactors had an enrichment of uranium?235 of 2.8% and an erbium mass content of 0.6%. In the new fuel, the enrichment is 2.7% and the erbium content is 0.35%. Calculations have shown that the new fuel type will compensate for changes in the neutronics parameters of the core caused by graphite repair, provide optimal conditions for further operation, and maintain the controllability and self?protection characteristics of the reactor plant. The optimized fuel was manufactured at the Machine?Building Plant in Elektrostal. Analysis of the operation of the first batch of 200 fuel assemblies will justify full?scale loading at all Smolensk NPP units and enable the extension of their operational life to 50 years.
