US Scientists Notch Nuclear Fusion Milestone – Report RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED 09.10.2013 Scientists in the United States have taken a major step towards replicating the process that powers the sun, coming closer than ever to achieving self-sustaining nuclear fusion which generates more energy than it consumes, BBC News reported this week. In an experiment last month at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in California, according to the report, researchers used 192 beams from the most powerful laser in the world to heat a tiny metal cylinder containing hydrogen fuel in order to incite nuclear fusion, often described as the “holy grail” of energy production. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor facility currently under construction in France plans to attempt to use magnetic fields to contain the fusion fuel, BBC News reported.
