Russia ratifies deal on cooperation in peaceful atom with Australia

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a federal law on the ratification of an agreement between Russia and Australia on cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, the Kremlin said Thursday.

The State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, ratified the agreement on June 9 and on June 23 it was approved by the Federation Council, Russia's upper house.

The agreement signed on September 7, 2007, in Sydney, stipulates expanding and strengthening of bilateral cooperation in using nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes.

According to the deal, the cooperation can take place through an exchange of scientific information, organization of joint projects and the establishment of joint ventures, supplies for a nuclear fuel cycle, including uranium conversion and enrichment of isotopes, transfer of industrial equipment and technologies of both Russia and Australia.

The agreement also stipulates the utilzation of Australian spent nuclear material after being processed at Russian plants, including for fuel production for nuclear power stations.
