It is a summary report of the International Conference on Research Reactors held in Vienna on 11-15 November 2024. The title of the publication is INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY, Research Reactors: Achievements, Experience and the Way to a Sustainable Future, IAEA, Vienna (2026). Since their inception in the 1950s, research reactors have played a pivotal role in driving innovation and supporting the development of nuclear science and technology worldwide. Their primary function is to produce neutrons for a wide range of applications, including research, education and training, as well as for use in sectors such as medicine, industry and agriculture. According to data from the IAEA Research Reactor Database, a total of 227 research reactors were operational in 54 countries in 2024, with 23 additional programmes at various stages of planning or development. The International Conference on Research Reactors: Achievements, Experience and the Way to a Sustainable Future was jointly organized by the IAEA and the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission. Initially scheduled to take place in Jordan from 27 November to 1 December 2023, the event was postponed owing to unforeseen circumstances and was ultimately held at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna from 11 to 15 November 2024. The conference attracted more than 400 in-person participants from 82 Member States and welcomed more than 600 additional participants on-line. It brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including reactor operators, users, regulators, designers and technology suppliers, to share knowledge and experience.
