The IAEA's "Atomic Technologies Licensed for Application at Sea" (ATLAS) initiative will support the maritime industry's exploration of small modular reactor (SMR) applications for powering civilian vessels and providing offshore energy, as shipowners consider alternative fuels and seek to strengthen long-term energy security. Nuclear energy is seen as a safe and viable option for commercial shipping, offering the potential for faster maritime transport without the need for frequent refueling. At the same time, innovations such as floating nuclear power plants provide versatile energy sources based on advanced small reactors and can supply power to coastal or remote communities and industries. The ATLAS launch event will serve as the official high-level kickoff for the initiative, providing political visibility and support while engaging technical experts to define its future direction.
