Taipingling-2 unit connected to grid

The unit No. 2 at the Taipingling nuclear power plant (China) has been connected to the grid for the first time, China General Nuclear (CGN) has reported.

This is the second of six Hualong One units planned for the site. It is important to note that the success was achieved by CGN, which at one time faced difficulties after the imposition of US sanctions against it.

First concrete for the unit was poured on 15 October 2020. An operating licence was issued on 30 April 2026. Fuel loading into the core was completed on 3 May 2026, and the reactor was brought to first criticality on 25 June 2026.

The unit generated its first kilowatt-hour of electricity on 4 July 2026. Its grid connection is not yet reflected in the PRIS database.

The reactor thermal power is 3190 MWt. The unit's gross electrical output is 1202 MWe, with a net output of 1116 MWe.

A series of tests will now be conducted on the unit. Commercial operation is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.

The construction cost of Taipingling-2 has not been disclosed, but the total cost for all six units is planned at about 120 billion yuan (approximately $17 billion).

Unit 1 is currently in commercial operation at the site, unit 2 is undergoing its start-up programme, units 3 and 4 are under construction, and approval for the construction of units 5 and 6 is pending.

To date, nine Hualong One units in China have operational status (including Taipingling-2). Of these, CNNC has four units, while CGN has five.

1-2) Fuqing-5/6;

3-4) Zhangzhou-1/2.

Hualong One units (CGN):

1-2) Fangchenggang-3/4;

3-4) Taipingling-1/2;

5) San'ao-1.
