Pump motors of service water supply system started up at Akkuyu NPP Unit 1 onshore pump station

Akkuyu Nuclear JSC Communications Service, PUBLISHED 13.06.2025

Idling of pump motors of the service water supply system was completed at the onshore pump station of Akkuyu NPP Unit 1 (being constructed by Rosatom). The system will provide water supply to the buildings of refrigerators and common-station compressor house.

Engineers have already installed pipelines to these buildings and inside the onshore pump station. After the motors are energized, each of the six pumps will have to undergo individual performance and leakage tests. The start-up and comprehensive trials of the motors is a key stage of preparation for putting the pump station equipment into normal operation.

Each energization of equipment at the Akkuyu NPP site is not just another stage of commissioning, but an important step on the way to the commencement of operation of the power unit. Experienced commissioning experts closely monitor the quality and sequence of all operations. Based on the results of cranking the motors of pump sets and subsequent individual tests, we will receive confirmation of the high state of readiness of the engineering systems of Unit 1 onshore pump station.

The system of service water for non-essential loads, consisting of six pump sets with a capacity of 770 m3/h each, supports the operation of auxiliary buildings and facilities of the nuclear power plant. The service water supply is a key element for the operation of auxiliary equipment responsible for the sustainable operation of the entire power unit infrastructure.

The refrigerator building is used to house equipment that provides cooling for auxiliary systems, including safety, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The equipment helps minimize the probability of overheating of individual systems, and maintains stable operation of the plant in all operational modes.

The compressor house building is designed to supply compressed air during normal operation of the NPP, as well as for testing the reactor building inner containment for strength and leak-tightness during commissioning.

Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant being built in the Republic of Turkiye. The Akkuyu NPP project includes four power units equipped with Generation 3+ VVER reactors of Russian design.

The capacity of each power unit will be 1200 MW. Akkuyu NPP is the first project in the global nuclear industry being implemented according to the Build-Own-Operate model.

Russia is actively developing scientific cooperation with all interested countries. The implementation of major international projects also continues. Rosatom and its divisions take part in this work.
