Main pump installed on Linglong One unit of Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant CNNC, PUBLISHED 04.05.2025 On April 16, the first main pump of the Linglong One, the world's first commercial land-based small modular reactor (SMR), was successfully put in place. As part of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC)'s multi-purpose SMR technology demonstration project in Hainan, it underscores China's comprehensive strength in the design of new-type nuclear energy systems, the manufacturing of high-end equipment, and the coordinated management of complex projects, and lays a solid foundation for the cold flow test and other upcoming critical links. The main pump for the Linglong One is single-speed, vertical and fully-sealed. As a key component of the reactor's primary loop, it has been reputed for high safety and long service life and been capable of providing the reactor system with stable coolant flow. The Linglong One is the world's first commercial land-based small modular pressurized water reactor that has passed safety assessments by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It is also one of major breakthroughs made by China in the independent nuclear power technology innovation. Featuring modular design, manufacturing, transport and rapid installation, it has become one of main development trends in the building of SMRs. Thanks to relatively small-scale capacity and minimal land usage, it doesn't need strict requirements over location selection and can be built in any suitable places in accordance with users' demand. In addition to power generation, the Linglong One can also be used for regional heating, seawater desalination and industrial steam supply. Each Linglong One unit has a power production capacity of 125,000 kilowatts and can generate up to one billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to meet the needs of over one million people. It equals to the reduction of 880,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and the plantation of 7.5 million trees.
