IFRES - the future of Chinese fast program

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 27.04.2022

The FR22 International Conference on Fast Reactors and Associated Fuel Cycles was held at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna from 19 to 22 April 2022.

Yang Hongyi from China Atomic Energy Institute CIAE gave a presentation on the current state of China's fast program.

The Chinese speaker also focused on the concept of the IFRES complex, which consists of units with fast reactors and one fuel regeneration facility located on a common site.

The complex has facilities for processing SNF of fast reactors based on pyroprocessing and fabrication of fuel for it.

Fast reactors in the complex solve three tasks: power generation, fuel breeding and transmutation. The task is to ensure the cost of an installed kilowatt of no more than 17,000 yuan ($2,600).

The type of reactors is the sodium fast reactors. The capacity of the unit is 1000-1200 MW(e). The fuel is the MOX or metal one. The breeding ratio is more than 1.1. The refueling cycle is 12 months or more. The service life is 60 years, the construction period is less than 60 months.

Topics: Asia, China, Fast breeders, Spent Fuel, FR21

At present, PWR light water reactors are the backbone of China's nuclear power industry. At the next stage of development, fast reactors should appear in the country, and fusion energy will become the third stage. In parallel with the development of reactor technologies, the development of the necessary fuel cycles is underway.
