China - results of year 2020

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 03.09.2021

There were 48 nuclear power units in commercial operation in 2020 in China. The total installed power of the commercial nuclear fleet was 49.88 GWe. In terms of the number of units and the power of the fleet, the country confidently ranks third in the world, behind only the United States and France.

The share of nuclear power plants in the total installed power of China in 2020 was 2.27%.

Nuclear power units in China generated 366.243 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2020, which is about 4.94% of the total electricity generation in the country.

The average number of hours of operation at power for nuclear power units was 7426.98 hours in 2020. Operational safety was respected - no incidents of level "2" or higher on the INES scale were registered.

Over the past 10 years, the volume of generation at Chinese nuclear power plants has more than quadrupled.

OPINION

Victor Murogov

Victor Murogov
This critical analysis of the history, state, and prospects of development of modern nuclear technologies shows that nuclear energy market has practically monopolized the design and construction of only one type of reactors (95% of NPPs under construction use pressurized water reactors), which necessitates training of focused specialists involved in the construction and operation of those nuclear power plants.
