Nuclear fuel elements for Chinese HTGR shipped

CNNC, PUBLISHED 13.01.2021

On January 9, the first batch of products from the world's first industrial-scale high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) nuclear fuel element production line, which was fully developed by China, was shipped from the North Nuclear Fuel Element Co Ltd of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) to the Shidaowan HTGR nuclear power plant demonstration project in Rongcheng, East China's Shandong province, to provide grid-connected power generation. The first of its kind globally, the project has independent intellectual property rights.

This is one of the most significant innovative achievements of the National Science and Technology Major Project. It represents an important step in advancing the application of China's fourth-generation nuclear power technology and also marks that China is able to supply high-quality HTGR spherical nuclear fuel elements to power plants on a sustainable basis.

High-temperature gas-cooled reactors, globally recognized as the fourth-generation nuclear energy system, have broad development prospects. The high-temperature gas-cooled reactor demonstration project has now successfully completed the dual reactor cold test and is undertaking the dual reactor hot test. The shipment of 78,000 spherical fuel elements to the demonstration plant is part of an initial delivery of 870,000 spherical fuel elements, which are expected to be put into the reactor in April.

Spherical fuel elements are an important component of the safety of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, and their manufacturing technology is one of the main technical challenges for the development of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.

This critical analysis of the history, state, and prospects of development of modern nuclear technologies shows that nuclear energy market has practically monopolized the design and construction of only one type of reactors (95% of NPPs under construction use pressurized water reactors), which necessitates training of focused specialists involved in the construction and operation of those nuclear power plants.

To sum up, we can say that from above we see a set of tasks and areas of activity that must be solved and developed to build the nuclear power of the future, and from below we see an understanding of how it can be done.
