The nuclear expert Mr. Alexander Uvarov, the Editor of the Nuclear information portal AtomInfo, expressed the opinion that the first Unit of the Indian Kudankulam NPP may come into operation again by the end of November this year.

He said that presently repairment works are carried out at the Unit as the experts rectify the malfunctions which have been observed in the course of the turbine tests.

Mr. Uvarov stated: "The Unit demonstrated the safe operation during more than 4000 hours generating more than 2.8 bln. kWt/h of energy to the Indian national grid. Now the Unit is at the stage of the pre-commissioning tests. The purpose of this stage is to check the functionality of the systems and equipment. In the course of the conducted tests some minor malfunctions of the turbine work have been observed. However all safety systems activated reliably and malfunction was diagnosed and observed promptly and rectification measures were elaborated in due time".

He emphasized that this event has not been classified either as an nuclear incident or as an accident. "The pre-commissioning tests stage is purposed exactly to observe such malfunctions. There are no danger or risks for population, environment or sea.

The Indian industrial sector has not got any damage either. For sure there is no radiation leakage", - stated Mr. Uvarov. He reiterated the opinion that "the Unit may be put into operation again by the end of November upon completion of all required works".
