Brazil upholds fuel swap deal with Iran

The effort to reach an agreement with Tehran on nuclear fuel swap was the right thing to do, the Brazilian foreign minister was reported by Iran Press TV as saying.

Addressing the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Celso Amorim brushed off U.S. criticism of the Tehran fuel swap declaration that was brokered by Brazil and Turkey.

"We are not nervous, because we are sure that we did the right thing," he said, adding that neither Brazil nor Turkey acted irresponsibly by signing the nuclear declaration in Tehran.

The Iranian, Brazilian, and Turkish foreign ministers agreed on May 17 that Iran will swap in Turkey most of its 3.5%-enriched uranium for 20%-enriched fuel for use in its Tehran scientific research reactor.

The move did not stop the Iran Six (Russia, the United States, Britain, France, Germany and China) from continuing discussions, begun on April 19, on a draft Security Council resolution to increase sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has criticized Russia and China, which have previously spoken out against sanctions, for supporting the draft.
